How do we address this?

• Refuge theology (I Samuel 22)
o REFUGE- Distressed, Discontented and in Debt
o TRANSFORMATION- Psalm 57 – (Baptidzo)
o PARTNERSHIP- David’s mighty men….

Fast forward 15 years:

• Not perfect, but still committed to being that place

YOU WON’T HAVE A CHURCH OF REFUGE UNTIL WE EACH COMMIT INDIVIDUALLY TO BEING PERSONS OF REFUGE:

1. What about my life is “good news”?
2. Am I safe? Speech full of grace and salt?
3. What about my life encourages people to cooperate with the Holy Spirit within them (walk the talk)
4. Am I a partner with God? Do I see myself as God’s secret agent? (I Pet 4:10)

David was a person of refuge

II Samuel
• Chapter 4…the accident of Mephibosheth
• Chapter 9…David looking for family of Saul to be gracious to
• Chapter 16 Absolom stages a coup
• Chapter 19 after Absolom is killed
• But this isn’t about Mephibosheth…it’s about the graciousness of David…who was a person of refuge.

Don’t be carried off or stolen by alien thoughts, philosophies or religion.

Wesley’s Quadrilateral:

We’re the riff-raff not the religious:

• We go “outside” w Jesus
• When we identify with Christ, we identify with his rejection
• He makes us holy

There are two things we do:

• Praise:
• Doing good:

How creative could you be with helping others?

Obedience to leaders:

• Satan’s tactic =attack the shepherd and the sheep will scatter

”I’ve never met an over-encouraged leader”

“I urge you to pay attention to what I’ve written”

1. Christ is central
2. Religion can’t produce what Christ did for us
3. Sabbath rest…the gift of delighting in Him
4. Call to maturity
5. Comparison between High Priest and Jesus
6. Comparison of old and new covenant and how Jesus fulfilled it
7. Persevere and don’t give up meeting together
8. Surrounded by martyrs who have demonstrated the life of faith
9. We are to run with endurance to get the prize
10. Balance truth and love…love people, use money…trust God
11. Careful of new ideas…be a “Young Fogey”!

Hebrews 13:1-7

Wrapping things up for the Hebrew believers who are to stand strong on what they know to be true rather than being blown by the forces of philosophy, strong religious leaders, self doubt or discouragement.

Love your family and others:

• New friends:
• Angels:
  • Assume God is directing your relationships
  • Hospitality isn’t a place, it’s an attitude.
• Prisoners and those in adversity:
  • Implied is suffering for the faith
  • As one body, when one part suffers, we all suffer
• Marriage is a priority relationship
  • Bed -cohabitation or chambering-implied is sexual promiscuity
  • Honor marriage in every way
    • head and body (Ephesians 5) (kephale not leader)
  • Love, respect, submit and sacrifice
• Spiritual leaders: (implied is those with “official authority”
  • Consider their lives- (examine)
  • Why Paul said “follow me as I follow Christ”.

Q: what about my life is imitate-able?

Use money (don’t love it) and trust the One who supplies it:

• The word for content means enough, satisfied, sufficient.
• Not greedy or envious

God supplies to kingdom builders not empire builders

God has always, is and will always be engaged:

• Same = (primary word emphatic) no change past, present or future.

God is count-on-able!

Concluding thoughts:

I have to have good theology…but it has to work itself out in daily living. It’s not just what I know, but who I am that counts.

Be encouraged but be ready!

After encouragement comes decision

Our God is a consuming Fire

Chapter 11 encouraged us to keep the faith. Chapter 12 tells us to keep running and focus on Jesus. But we must understand after all of the encouragement…It’s time to make a decision:

• It is work…it’s not passive (vs. 14)
• Grace is what we give, not bitter fruit (vs. 15)
o I Peter 4:10 we transfer grace
o We also transfer bitterness
o Pikria: a bitter root that produces a bitter fruit
o Envy: Envy aims, at least in terms of one’s wishes, at destroying others’ good fortune.
• Casual disregard will end up in bitter tears (Vs 16)
o Godless means exchanging inheritance for immediate satisfaction of wants
• He’s not a scary God, but He is a victorious one! (Vs 18)
o we can come boldly, but we must come
o Not a “scary cosmic killjoy” God; But instead
1. Who Lives in Zion…victorious
2. Countless thousands of angels are rejoicing (what Isaiah saw and John…perhaps Paul)
3. Where victorious believers are gathered
4. The righteous who have now been made perfect (we are being made perfect…this is where it is completed)
5. Jesus incarnate…we can boldly come into His presence
6. Jesus who did this by going through the pain of death and shedding his blood…his life spilled out for us.
• Refusing to listen is the warning (Vs. 25)
o Jesus is greater than Moses
• THIS KINDOM IS UNSHAKABLE…make sure you’re living in the right one!
o We please Him through worship (Romans 12)
o FOR OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE!

Sinners in Zion are terrified; Trembling has seized the godless. “Who among us can live with the consuming fire? Who among us can live with continual burning?” Is 33:14

His character cannot allow for continued disregard…be encouraged, but make a decision!
