Sermon: Mary, Mary (One Was) Quite Contrary
Leading up to Easter, Jesus revisits Bethany. The story is about Him being anointed by a woman in a man named Simon’s house. In the story, those witnessing the anointing are annoyed by her act of devotion. Are there two Simons, two Marys, and two anointings?
In this case:
The home is Simon the leper’s (not Simon the Pharisee’s).
It happens at a dinner.
This woman is Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
Contrary means opposite in nature, direction, or meaning. It means being perversely inclined to disagree or to do the opposite of what is expected or desired.
Mary was quite contrary.
What we can learn from her contrary behavior that Jesus affirms?
They resented her because they didn’t get her or Jesus!
Embriamaomai means snorting of a horse, to scold.
Conclusion: How contrary am I willing to be?
Am I devoted to Jesus as the King of my life, High Priest who stands in the gap for me, and Savior whose blood atones for my sin?
Am I willing to let my devotion be seen as fanatical?
Am I willing to be contrary?
“I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” – Mark 14:9 (NLT)
