A Whack in the Head To Cause a Change in the Heart
Pastor Jim Halbert - Romans 9-11
This is not Paul’s systematic theology. This is a real letter about a real problem: racial superiority and antisemitism.
Jews returning to Rome are experiencing Roman-Gentile superiority. Chapters9-11 deal with the need for unity in the body.
- “These three chapters are the most difficult in Scripture to understand.” –Tim Keller
Paul gets stern with the Gentiles about their need for humility. Paul gives them a whack in the head to cause a change of heart.
- “Foreknowledge, election and salvation are three separate things and ought not be mushed together” –Dr. Ben Witherington, Asbury Seminary
Let’s be clear; It is only through faith in Christ that we are grafted into the family of God. This is for anybody that God draws to Himself.
A change of heart is needed!
- Who is God’s real family?
- Who’s in, and who’s out?
- What’s in your heart?
- Behavioral modification is not required, but behavioral cooperation with the Holy Spirit is.
“It is through humble faith, not arrogant entitlement, that I come to Him. It is only when I recognize that I am undeserving of His love, and fall completely on his grace and mercy, that I am forgiven of my sin, welcomed into His family, and given eternal life with Him.” -Timothy Keller
